Kusunoki Masashige · 1294–1336
In 1333 Masashige held the small mountain fort of Chihaya against one of the largest armies in Japan. He rolled logs and boulders down the slopes, set dummy soldiers on the walls and cut the enemy off from water. The siege dragged on for months and the fort never fell. His statue stands outside the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.
