Sent away as a child hostage, Ieyasu spent decades serving stronger lords and biding his time while others rushed for power. He did not become shogun until he was 60, and the peace his family built lasted more than 250 years. An old Japanese verse sums him up: if the cuckoo will not sing, wait until it does.
