Uesugi Kenshin · 1530–1578
Kenshin and Takeda Shingen were bitter rivals who fought each other for over a decade. The story goes that when other lords cut off the salt supply to Shingen's landlocked province, Kenshin refused to join in and let salt reach his enemy's people, saying he fought with swords, not salt. In Japan, "sending salt to your enemy" is still a saying today.
