Inspired by
Saigō Takamori · 1828–1877
Often called the last true samurai. Saigō helped build modern Japan, then broke with the new government over how the samurai were being treated. At Shiroyama in 1877, surrounded and outnumbered many times over, he chose to stand with his last few hundred men rather than surrender. His statue still stands in Tokyo's Ueno Park.
